Looking to spend one day in Yosemite National Park? This itinerary covers all that you need to see, especially if it’s your first time visiting!

Yosemite National Park is located in central California and is one of the greatest in size in the US. It is surrounded by the Sierra Nevada mountains and sits over a valley with stunning sunset views, towering rocks, and granite cliffs.

Because Yosemite National Park is so large, it is impossible to see everything in one day. You would need to stay there for at least one week to truly explore all the park has to offer.

After living in California for the past few years, I’ve found the perfect combination to make the most of one day in Yosemite, and am ready to share the best with you!

Let’s jump in!

🚗 The best way to get to Yosemite is by renting a car. When booking your California car rental online, I recommend using Discover Cars. They provide the best deals for car rentals!

One Day in Yosemite National Park

One Day in Yosemite National Park Itinerary

You’ll spend most of your one day in Yosemite National Park in Yosemite Valley. This is the most popular and must-see area of the park!

1. Tunnel View

tunnel view

Start your visit at Tunnel View, the best-known viewpoint in Yosemite Valley. It offers a sweeping panorama where you can see many famous features of the national park.

To the north, you can see the face of El Capitan rising majestically to over 3,000 feet, and to the South is Bridalveil Falls. You can also see the Half Dome from this vantage point, which looks like a dome cut in half.

This is the perfect spot to take pictures of the spectacular views and is a must-visit if you only have one day in Yosemite National Park. It is especially magical at sunset and sunrise, so you can either start or finish your day here.

2. Cook Meadows Walk

cook meadows walk

Once you return to the main road after seeing the panoramic views from Tunnel View, you can pull off to the side of the road for Cook Meadows Walk.

For a short and easy walking trail, this is a great option. The loop is about two miles long, but you can walk as long as you’d like or even just hop out for a quick photo.

The path takes you near the bottom part of Yosemite Falls. You will go past flower-filled meadows, and if you are lucky, you can see some wildlife in the area. You can catch glimpses of Half Dome.

If you continue walking, you’ll come across Sentinel Bridge which has the best view of Half Dome over the Merced River.

3. Yosemite Falls

yosemite falls

The falls are one of the most spectacular features of Yosemite National Park. The granite cliffs of Yosemite Falls are from a height of 2,400 feet and can be easily seen when you are in the park. In late spring and early summer, you’ll see Yosemite falls at its fullest due to the snow and ice melting from winter.

As you drive through the valley, you’ll catch a glimpse or hear the rushing sound of the falls. The cooling mist is also enjoyable in the hot summer weather.

If you’d like to park and get out of the car, you can walk to the Swinging Bridge which offers an unobstructed view of the falls’ majesty and is worth a visit.

🚗 The best way to get to Yosemite is by renting a car. When booking your California car rental online, I recommend using Discover Cars. They provide the best deals for car rentals!

4. Mist Trail

nevada falls on mist trail

The Mist Trail is located close to Yosemite Valley and is one of the most popular hikes in the park. It takes you up near Vernal Falls and then back down, but it can be very slippery due to the mist so make sure you are wearing sensible shoes.

This is a strenuous hike but offers incredible views of both Vernal and Nevada Falls as you climb up, and the reward of standing beneath Vernal Falls is worth it. After Vernal Falls, continue following the Mist Trail (and climbing some hard stairs) to get to the top of Nevada Falls.

When you hike the Mist Trail, the elevation gain is about 2,900 feet and can take up to 3 hours. However, it feels much steeper than that while you’re on the trail!

You can also take the John Muir Trail which offers a longer but easier hike to Nevada Falls, but you will need more time for that one. The silver lining in the John Muir Trail is that you’ll be climbing down those stairs on the Mist Trail!

5. Glacier Point Overlook

glacier point overlook

For some incredible views of Yosemite Valley and Half Dome, you must visit Glacier Point. It’s a great place for sunset as well since from this vantage point you can watch the sun setting over the high Sierra Nevada Mountains in the background.

The drive to Glacier Point is roughly a 1-hour drive from Yosemite Valley, and it’s best to leave in the afternoon. Follow Wawona road south from Yosemite Valley. Once you’re there, you can take a short hike around this point for some spectacular views of Curry Village and Yosemite Valley.

Keep in mind that parking can be difficult to find here and this overlook is only open over the summer months, generally from May through November. If you are visiting when the roads are closed, then you won’t be able to see this part or the next.

6. Taft Point Loop Trail

taft point sunset view

End your one day in Yosemite National Park at Sentinel Dome & Taft Point Loop Trail to watch the sunset over Yosemite Valley. This is a great spot to watch the stars come out at night, and it’s also a popular place for stargazers.

You might be feeling pooped out from exerting all that energy on the Mist Trail, but keep pushing through!

Taft Point Loop Trail trail has many spectacular views of Yosemite Valley and can be accessed from Glacier Point. The trail is roughly 5 miles long and has about 1,200 feet of elevation gain. Be sure to start this hike about 2 hours before the sun sets to get that perfect golden picture.

Yosemite Valley Visitor Center

paf and friends in yosemite valley

Yosemite Park has four visitor centers. The Yosemite Valley Visitor Center is the largest and most comprehensive of the four. You can read a lot of material on the park and check information about the park, including the weather. You can also chat with park rangers who can answer your questions.

There are souvenirs, books, maps, and artworks available for sale, and if you have an American national park passport, you can have it stamped there. You can watch programs and see the various displays that explain the area’s history. The visitors center hosts the West Auditorium Theatre and the Ansel Adams Gallery, displaying the famous photographer’s artwork.

El Capitan

el capitan

El Capitan is a meadow with a wide view of El Capitan mountain. The granite rock that rises over 3,000 feet is a striking sight. The cliff is a favorite challenge for rock climbers. Its height and steepness present a tough climbing challenge for climbers looking to get to the top.

The views are worth the punishing climb up for the climbers who get to the top of the rock. If you are in Yosemite park for one day, you can watch the climbers using powerful binoculars. The view from the meadow is also enjoyable and relaxing. You can take a short walk, less than 1 mile, to Bridal Veil Falls.

🚗 The best way to get to Yosemite is by renting a car. When booking your California car rental online, I recommend using Discover Cars. They provide the best deals for car rentals!

Sierra Point Trail (Yosemite’s Hidden Trail)

summit of sierra point trail

Sierra Point Trail is not typically found on any hiking maps but is still technically open to the public. It’s known as Yosemite’s hidden trail because of a rock slide in the 1970s that destroyed the trail.

You can hike this trail if you know where to look but when you ask the rangers, they will often tell you that it’s not recommended to take this trail. It’s a moderate to strenuous hike (or scrambling) of 4 miles with an elevation gain of about 3,000 feet and can be completed in about 4 hours.

If you’re in decent shape and aren’t afraid to climb over rocks or hike on rocky terrain, this may be the trail for you! The views from the top are worth the effort and you can get some great shots of El Capitan and Half Dome from up there!

To start the hike, you’ll start on the John Muir Trail toward Vernal Falls. When you reach a sign that says “Rock Piles” with pictures of mammals, head straight up the rocks. You’ll generally want to keep to the right and you should be able to find remnants of the Sierra Point Trail.

Mariposa Grove

N in mariposa grove in front of a redwood giant

Mariposa Grove is located at the south entrance of Yosemite National Park. Here you’ll see one of the oldest and largest collections of giant sequoias, some more than 2,000 years old. This grove contains over 500 ancient trees with walking paths along each one.

You can walk around the grounds at your own pace to marvel at these giant trees. You can hike on either the moderate Grizzly Giant Loop Trail or the strenuous Mariposa Grove Trial.

When is the Best Time To Visit Yosemite National Park

yosemite falls from sierra piont

Yosemite Park is open throughout the year. However, the best months to visit are late spring to early autumn. The peak season for visitors is between May and October. During this time, the weather is pleasant. The crowds peak in July and August.

In May and early June, the waterfalls have the most water, and the meadows will have bursts of color from the flowers. It is one of the best times to see the natural attractions in the park. In late October, when fall is beginning, the temperatures drop and get chilly. You will need to carry warm clothing and gear to visit the park during this time.

How To Get To Yosemite National Park

arch entrance in yosemite NP

There are several entrances by which you can access the national park in Yosemite. The first park entrance that will best position you for this one day in Yosemite itinerary is Highway 140 to Arch Rock Entrance. This entrance will route you to Yosemite Valley.

Note: If you are flying into California solely for Yosemite National Park, then I highly recommend flying into Fresno airport so you’ll only have about a 1-hour drive to Arch Rock Entrance.

The other 4 entrances are dependent on where you are coming from. You can take the Hetch Hetchy Entrance if you’re coming from the west like Sacramento or Sonora or enter through the Oak Flat Entrance from the Bay Area.

The South Entrance is for those coming from the south like Los Angeles. And if you’re entering Yosemite National Park from the east like Lake Tahoe or Death Valley, then you’ll want the Tioga Pass Entrance.

How to Get Around Yosemite National Park

Some shuttles leave the Yosemite Valley Lodge regularly, and you can book one in advance. If you want to ride around the valley, you can hire a bicycle. You can use one route to get into the park and leave using another one to see as much as possible of the beautiful national park’s natural features.

The best way to around Yosemite is to rent a car. When booking your rental online, I highly recommend using Discover Cars as they have some of the best prices.

What to Pack for One Day in Yosemite National Park

For one day in Yosemite National Park, there are a couple of essentials that you will need for the day. There are some considerations before you pack. For instance, the weather and the activities you will carry out.

Here are some of the essentials you should consider packing:

paf and sis smiling

☀️ Sunscreen is important to protect your skin from sunburn during the peak hours of heat in the middle of summer. Sunglasses and a hat will also help you remain comfortable in the sun.

🥾 Wear sturdy hiking boots for the trails. Break into them before visiting to avoid getting blisters, especially if you will be walking for most of the day. You’ll also want a good grip because of slippery trails, especially near numerous falls. Waterproof boots are also a good option.

🚰  It is important to stay thoroughly hydrated to avoid heat headaches, heat cramps, or heat stroke. Bring a full water bottle with you or carry an electrolyte drink. The drink will also re-energize you when you feel weak.

🧥 Dress in layers. It can be chilly in the early morning hours and late evening. However, the heat of the day will bring on the heat. Bring a sweater to wear and have quick-drying clothing underneath.

🗺️ Because there is so much to do and so many features in the park, a map will help you navigate. You will get a map while entering the park, and you can also download a park map on your phone.

🐻 Have bear-proof bags for your food and any scented items. Bears have a strong sense of smell and may attack you or your vehicle to access what they can smell. It is important to note that bear spray is not allowed in the park.

Where to Eat in Yosemite National Park

N and friend at restaurant in oakhurst

I highly recommend packing your own lunch and/or dinner when spending one day in Yosemite National Park. There are so many beautiful views to enjoy while you eat.

If you don’t have time to make your own lunch, one of the best places to eat in Yosemite Valley is Basecamp Eatery which has a variety of food items and snacks. They offer delicious sandwiches, salads, pizzas, burgers, and more!

If you are staying in Oakhurst, there are also various restaurants to eat there. A couple of our favorites are El Cid for Mexican or the Oakhurst Grill & Whisky 41 Lodge for American food.

General Tips for One Day in Yosemite National Park

mirror lake
  • Plan to visit the whole park from dawn to dusk–at least that’s what this itinerary covers. 😜 But you can take your time, or edit this itinerary according to how exhausted you feel.
  • It is best to start your day early to avoid long lines at the entrances and crowds on the hiking trails. In terms of keeping cool, the mountains around the valley will keep the area in shadow for an hour after the sun has risen. It also goes into shadow way before the sun has set.
  • During summer, daylight is 12 hours, giving you enough time to explore the park. In late autumn and winter, the daylight hours are only 8. Springtime gives you about 10 hours of daylight.
  • Pack enough snacks and a lunch to eat during your one day in Yosemite National Park. Some of my favorite hiking snacks are trail mix, freeze-dried fruits, and peanut butter and jelly or turkey sandwiches.

Safety Tips for One Day in Yosemite National Park

To remain safe and enjoy your visit to the national park, it is important to pay attention to some safety guidelines. Be aware of these precautions.

  • Extreme heat: Monitor yourself for the amount of time you spend in the sun. If you begin to feel faint or dizzy, take time and sit in a shaded area to rest and drink lots of water. If you are on any medication, such as an asthmatic inhaler or diabetic insulin pack, then have your medication with you for any emergencies.
  • Drink Water and Eat Food: Water will help you stay hydrated, and you should have plenty of it and keep drinking it. There are a few spots on the trails to fill up your water bottle and use the restroom as needed. Have high-energy snacks that you can nibble on whenever you feel your energy getting low. When you feel tired, take a rest and eat some food.
  • Dangerous Trails: To avoid twisting your ankle or other incidents, invest in good hiking boots with good grip. Pay attention to the trail to avoid losing your balance, especially on high-altitude trails. You can also have a walking stick to steady you on rugged hiking paths.
  • Altitude Sickness: Because Yosemite is at an altitude of over 4,000 feet, you may experience some altitude sickness. You may feel slightly out of breath, and in more severe cases, you may have a headache and some nausea. If it is not severe, remain hydrated and eat high-energy food. If it becomes worse, head back down to the lower ground.
  • Animals: Do not approach wild animals even though they appear harmless. To avoid attracting bears, dispose of your food trash in trash cans as soon as you are done. The trash cans in the park are animal-proof to prevent attracting bears from coming to the area.
  • Weather: Sometimes rain and thunderstorms will come with lightning. Check the weather to make sure that you’re headed back to safety before rainstorms or lightning starts.

Where to Stay in Yosemite National Park

If you plan on spending more than one day in Yosemite National Park, then there are many different types of accommodations in the park and around the park. There are hotels, campgrounds, cabins, and rental properties.

Yosemite National Park Lodges

The national park has two lodges where you can get accommodation. The Ahwahnee Hotel offers luxury and high-end amenities. If you want to stay in style, this is a great option in Yosemite Valley.

Yosemite Valley Lodge is in the valley and near Yosemite Falls is close to many of the activities and attractions, which is a plus. It is also fairly priced, making it a great option for comfortable and convenient living quarters.

>> Check Best Prices for Yosemite Valley Lodge! <<

The two lodges get booked fairly quickly. If you would like to stay in either of them, book your at least a year in advance when the reservations are open. The slots get filled up pretty fast because Yosemite is a popular destination.

Campgrounds and Cabins

Many people who visit the park love to camp to experience the beauty of nature. There are several campgrounds available in the park.

The first is Curry Village, which has a mix of tent camping and cabins. It is located near Yosemite Falls and provides easy access to many activities in the area. Depending on which cabin you select, you’ll have amenities from wooden frames to electrical sockets.

Upper Pines Campground is also a great option, as it has space for RVs as well as tents. Plus, reservations can be made up to five months ahead of your visit to

Camp 4 is the best option for climbers as it is set on an elevation. It does not allow for pets or vehicles. Other campsites are Wawona and Bridalveil Creek Campground in the southern part of the valley.

In the North Yosemite Valley, the campgrounds include Crane Flat, Hodgdon Meadow, Tamarack Flat, Yosemite Creek, and others.

Book the grounds early enough, especially for peak periods. They tend to get filled up pretty early and you must have a reservation to camp there.

Staying Outside of Yosemite National Park

You can also choose to stay in a hotel or a home rental outside of Yosemite National Park. Mariposa is a great option as it is close to the western entrance of the park. You can find quality lodging, restaurants, and some great hiking trails nearby.

>> Check for Hotels in Mariposa! <<

The other town to consider staying in is Oakhurst. It is situated in the southern part of Yosemite. You can find some great hotels and restaurants here. Our family enjoys staying at Bass Lake and then entering through the South Entrance.
