Best Restaurants in Monterey, California
1. Abalonetti Restaurant & Grill
Abalonetti Restaurant and Grill is an Italian gem with amazing seafood. Nestled in the heart of Monterey on Fisherman’s Wharf, this spot is a local favorite, founded with a passion for bringing the best of the ocean to your plate.
No need to stress about reservations – you can walk right in to be seated. I recommend grabbing a spot on their charming outdoor terrace when it’s warm.
Italian is always a hit and you can’t go wrong here! Grab their Gnocchi with Two Sauces or try the well-loved Fish and Chips. If you have a big party, the Cioppino is delicious!
You can’t miss the classic clam chowder either! Order it with the Oysters Rockefeller starter as you wait for the main entrees.
The service is quick and every experience here has been great!
2. Domenico’s on the Wharf
- Recommended by Denise at Chef Denise
As the name suggests, Domenico’s on the Wharf is an Italian-inspired seafood restaurant on Monterey’s Old Fisherman’s Wharf.
The wharf is independent and not related to the more well-known Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. However, you’ll find many of the famous San Francisco specialties like Cioppino and Louie Salads at Domenico’s.
Seafood doesn’t get much fresher than this “boat to table” restaurant. Originally fishermen, the family of this family-run restaurant still has a fishing fleet that delivers fresh catches from Alaska to Monterey Bay to the restaurant.
From the king crab to the local sardines, scallops, and sand dabs, Domenico’s is the place for seafood on the wharf. Get a double dose of local ingredients and try their Prawns Scampi Castroville. Castroville (in Monterey County) is the artichoke capital of the world after all!
In addition to delicious food and fabulous service, Domenico’s has lots of window tables with terrific views of the bay and the boats.
Make a reservation and request one of these tables. They won’t guarantee it, but you’ll have a better shot. You can catch glimpses from almost any table, but the window should be your first choice.
3. Monterey Bay Creamery
Monterey Bay Creamery on Fisherman’s Wharf is a sweet haven for all ice cream enthusiasts! Located right next to Abalonetti’s, this charming spot is easy access to a must-visit for a delightful frozen treat.
The ice cream here is nothing short of heavenly. Try the Salted Caramel Sundae which is a perfect balance of sweetness and salty indulgence that’ll have your taste buds dancing. Pair it with a freshly made waffle cone for the ultimate experience.
You’ll stand in line to get your ice cream. There is no seating area so you can walk along Fisherman’s Wharf while also saying hi to friendly dogs, or head on over to the end of the wharf to watch for sea otters.
The cozy ambiance and friendly service make it a perfect pitstop during your stroll along the wharf.
Monterey Bay Creamery isn’t just an ice cream joint; it’s a moment of pure bliss. So, if you’re craving a scoop of happiness with a side of seaside charm, this spot is an absolute must on your Monterey Bay adventure!
4. Paris Bakery
For a great breakfast pick-me-up, check out Paris Bakery! Tucked away in the neighborhood, this bakery has a comfy vibe that’s perfect for starting your day.
Step inside, and you’ll catch the scent of freshly baked goodies. The owner moved from France to California and has been sourcing his French pastries around the area.
I recommend getting chocolat au pain or the almond croissant. Both are flaky and packed with sugary goodness. It’ll feel like you’re in Paris!
With friendly service and mouthwatering pastries, Paris Bakery is the low-key spot for a tasty morning bite in Monterey.
If you’re up for a breakfast that mixes French flair with Monterey vibes, hit up Paris Bakery for a morning filled with yum!
5. El Cantaro
- Recommended by Haley from Fernweh Foreigner
El Cantaro is a vegan Mexican restaurant located just a few blocks from Cannery Row in Monterey.
The restaurant is like one of those hole-in-the-wall Mexican places, nothing too fancy, but with a healthier vegan twist. It is a walk-up to the counter and order kind of place but there aren’t too many tables and no reservation system.
Since Monterey is somewhat lacking in healthier, allergy-friendly restaurant options, El Cantaro is a fantastic place to go to get a safe, healthier, and tasty meal. Still, you don’t have to be a vegan to enjoy it.
Just about everything on their menu is a hit from chick’n burritos and crispy potato tacos to enchiladas rojas and tortilla soups.
Plus, their food is very reasonably priced with the highest menu item being their “Famous Chile en Ahogada Plate” for just $12.95.
El Cantaro is the perfect place to fill up after a long day playing golf at Pebble Beach or whale watching in Monterey Bay.
Although it is nothing fancy, the restaurant is clean and the staff is super friendly and helpful, especially if you have other dietary concerns.
6. Bubba Gump Shrimp Co
Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. on Cannery Row is a seafood haven that’ll make your taste buds do a happy dance. Right by the water, this spot brings the spirit of the movie “Forrest Gump” to life, creating a fun and lively atmosphere.
Seafood is the star here, and you’re in for a treat. The Dumb Luck Coconut Shrimp and Dr. Pepper are must-tries for any Forest Gump enthusiast! The menu is a seafood lover’s dream, with options for every palate.
If shrimp (or seafood) isn’t your thing, go for Mama’s Fried Chicken served with mashed potatoes-yum!
While you wait, check out the trivia at the table and see how much you know! Our experiences at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. have always been a blast, thanks to the lively atmosphere and speedy service.
You can just stroll in and soak up the vibrant vibes, however, this restaurant might have a wait time during the peak hours of lunch and dinner.
If you’re up for a shrimp-tastic adventure with a side of fun, this spot is a must-visit on your Monterey food journey!
7. Troya Turkish Delights
Down at Cannery Row, stop for a sweet treat at Troya Turkish Delights! This hidden gem brings a taste of Turkey to Monterey, and it’s a cozy spot to end your day.
As you walk in, you’ll be awed by the charming chandelier and beautiful mosaics. Then, you’ll be hit with the tempting aroma of Turkish delights. For a classic dessert, go for the baklava–it’s flaky and full of honey goodness.
A great delight to start off with (if this is your first time) is to try the honey pistachio delight. The plain Lemon Narnia delight is also a great choice!
There is limited seating if you want to sit down and savor your delights. However, you can also buy and wander the Cannery Row strip. Find a bench to enjoy the flavors or take in the lively atmosphere.
Troya Turkish Delights offers a cozy vibe and tasty treats, making it a great find for those looking to savor a bit of Turkish cuisine in Monterey.
